Just had to share this quickly - At the moment I am sitting on the beach with my wireless 3G connection to the web and my laptop watching Dave Warlick live blog from the NECC conference in San-Antonio Texas. I am joining in the session with questions and feedback to the conversation - almost as good as being there!! What a great way to learn!! Dave has just posed my question to the audience
I informed Dave where I am at the moment and he just told the audience - then added that this is what Classroom 2.0 is!! Well put Dave - this is the way we learn best, my environment with the tools that allow anywhere anytime connection and conversation!!
I have just left a note with Dave letting him and his audience know that I will be posting a run down of a presentation I am co-presenting in 2 weeks time all about an inquiry based learning approach using social networking and multimedia. I will have this up later today…..
Just signed up for two new (well new to me) web 2 services. First up, I had heard a lot about pownce for quite some time and never got around to playing with it. Pownce is nice and clean - much like twitter but with some interesting features. It allows you to add files etc to your messages, hence allowing your friends/followers access to your attachments. Also include a handy desktop client.
The second service which I am much more excited about is FriendFeed. This service allows you to share all your web 2 services (blogs, twitters, pownce messages etc et) all on the one page. Friends can subscribe to your feed page and see everything you are doing on all the major services from one handy page. Love the potential of this and can’t wait to see more people in my online network jump on board. So jump onto Pownce or FriendFeed and add me (Brettos).
Just wondering if anyone would be interested in being a part of an Aussie Educators Podcast. Something like what Bob Sprankle in the US does with his Seedlings show - but with more of an Aussie slant on things. They do a great job of sharing tips and picks of the week and I think it would be great if we had something for the Aussie’s (and I guess we can include the Kiwi’s). I have the setup to record the podcast (all join in via skype) and then I will mix and edit the show…..
Basically, I am thinking…
1) Once a fortnight to start with (maybe once a week)
2) A panel of 4 - 5 Aussie educators who have something to share
3) A set list of discussion points set before each show.
4) Picks of the week - Be it software or weblink etc
5) Target Audience - Educators keen to be at the cutting edge of learning technologies.
If you are keen and think you could ad something to a show like this leave a comment on the blog here. Then I will contact everyone and see if we can come up with a name for our show and a recording schedule that fits with everyone.
All good things come to an end eventually — even your college days of unlimited, high-bandwidth internet access, all-you-can-eat cafeteria food and cushy, part-time jobs. But what to do about it? Considering that much of what you learn at uni will be obsolete by the time you graduate, it’s tough to know what courses will best prepare you for a good career…. There are some very interesting thoughts in this Wired article published today.
Well I am preparing some presentations I am giving next week up in north Queensland on podcasting and e-portfolios. I am heading up there to do some work with teachers and to also see what some schools are doing in the areas of digital media. Should be an exciting trip. Once I have the presentations finished I will post them up here for comments etc. Just finished listening to Wes Fryer’s latest podcast over at Moving at the speed of creativity, where he had a group of teachers record and podcast their ideas on using podcasting in their classrooms.
Just found this site….. What an awesome concept - http://www.rockourworld.org/ if you are interested in podcasting you need to check this out!!!
I would be interested to hear some feedback from folks that are using podcasting at present and or e-portfolios. Just leave your comments here on the blog… More soon….
Well I am back from a short vactaion… Now spending my last week of holidays studying for my Final Cut Pro certification exam. It is quite interesting working through the course work, I just hope I can get through it all. I took a break from it all tonight and came across this video on youtube…. Certainly some food for thought. The stats in the video relate to us here in Australia just as much as the folk in the US. It would be interesting to see how Australian students compared. Anyway, enjoy the video and let me know what you think…
Oh my this is going to be quite interesting…. A complete education conference hosted in second life. Free registration for everyone open to anyone. Check out the link and let me know what you think - Once I work out the time for us Aussies I will post more.
Wow it has been a long time between podcasts…. However, I have got some great content for today…. I was recently disappointed to miss out on Jimmy Wales tour here in Australia. I found a recording of Jimmy’s presentation in Sydney which was broadcasted on national radio here in Australia. Thanks to the folk at educationau who always put on fascinating events for the education world here in Australia.
So sit back and enjoy episode 24!! More to come soon - I hope!!
An interesting article from the NYTimes that I found on digg this afternoon…. Worth a read by those interested in new forms of media and how this could possibly change the way we view news and stay informed…. Some interesting observations here….
“Imagine a newspaper with over 2,000 writers, researchers and copy editors, yet no supervisors or managers. No deadlines; no meetings; no chain of command. That seemingly chaotic nonstructure isn’t recognizable of the hierarchical editorial control of old media, yet that’s exactly how Wikipeida, an essential source for the VA Tech shootings, works.”
I have been eying off a great PD chance put on by the folk at education.au later this month. Unfortunately, given current circumstances I probably won’t be able to make the event. While I was searching Jimmy Wales and some of his previous presentations I came across this video presentation. This is certainly worth a look…. For those heading to the education.au event blog away and let me know how it goes.
